What makes this place so special? Something called the “Hoodoos”, a type of formation found on every continent, but nowhere on Earth as abundant as in the northern section of Bryce Canyon, in fact the park is known for hosting the largest collection of hoodoos in the world.

According to the USA National Park Service “Hoodoos are tall skinny spires of rock that protrude from the bottom of arid basins and ‘broken’ lands.” They differ to pinnacles because of their variable thickness, often described as ‘totem pole-shaped body’. Hoodoos are formed in sedimentary rock, and their shape is a consequence of the erosional patterns of alternating hard and softer rock layers. Two weathering processes continuously sculpt Bryce Canyon’s landscape: frost wedging and rain, being the first one the primary because of the area’s over 200 freeze/thaw cycles per year. What happens is very simple: “In the winter, melting snow, in the form of water, seeps into the cracks and freezes at night. When water freezes it expands by almost 10%, bit by bit prying open cracks, making them ever wider”.

A curious thing? This natural phenomena will not last for ever and the same process that created the hoodoos will, with time, be equally aggressive and lead to their destruction. So the hoodoos have a some sort of a “limited lifecycle” and Bryce Canyon, as we know it, will not always exist.

When in the park be ready for immediate WOW action since the hoodoos are fast and easy to see for everyone. While the most famous ones requiere some hiking, all visitors can enjoy the overlooks of the Bryce Amphitheater without any type of physical effort. For the adventurous spirits “Navajo Loop” and “Queen’s Garden” trails will lead down to the base of the hoodoos in the daylight and you can even enjoy the “Full Moon Hikes” for a totally different experience.

Before entering any trail remember to be equipped for the season: it can get crazy hot during summer and intensely cold in winter and, for security reasons it is recommended to ask park rangers at the Visitor Center for your planned trail conditions.

Bryce Canyon National Park is one of those places in which both words and photographs will fall short trying to describe the beauty of the landscape (and most of the time they will not do it justice). So we, at Cultoural.com STRONGLY suggest that you pay a visit to the Hoodoos and let their unique beauty and endless majesty amaze you.

A tip? Try to see the Hoodoos after a rainstorm for more vibrant colors, when they are topped with snow for contrasting beauty or in the middle of the night to enjoy them under the stars and moonlight.

For more information on Hoodoos and Bryce Canyon visit: https://www.nps.gov/brca/index.htm

Special thanks to Jerika Mays, Justin Powell, the staff of Youthlinc and the Department’s of State Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) for making our visit to Utah and Bryce Canyon possible.
